SG Flensburg-Handewitt’s final home game was, once again, much more than just 60 minutes of handball. The third half was an emotional one, as four players were honored. Kevin Møller and Johannes Golla were even inducted into the “Hall of Fame.”
As usual, the team thanked the crowd with a four-minute standing ovation. The gala finale began with Johannes Golla being honored by the “Flensburg Journal” as SG Handball Player of the Year. The lights went out. “Auf in den Kampf” rang out. At first, only Lukas Jørgensen and Adin Faljić returned. The Bosnian had once again put in a great performance against Eisenach. “I’ve enjoyed every day at this club,” he said. In German, he added: “We’ll see each other again.” Each of the departing players was honored with kind words and memorable video clips. The crowd saw once again how Lukas Jørgensen celebrated at Südermarkt. The Dane goes down in club history as a top pivot and two-time winner of the EHF European Cup. “I had imagined my farewell differently,” said Lukas Jørgensen, who has been dealing with a torn cruciate ligament since January. “I want to thank everyone for their support over the past few months; the team spirit at this club is impressive. I will always remain a part of SG Flensburg-Handewitt.”
A great honor for Johannes Golla and Kevin Møller The team lined up to form a guard of honor for the other two departing players, who emerged one after the other from the dark tunnel. “There’s a young player there who’s going to be really good, and you have to sign him,” SG President Dierk Schmäschke recalled the time when Johannes Golla was set to be signed. That was over eight years ago. The longtime captain pulled out a piece of paper. Saying goodbye wasn’t easy for him. “We’ve always felt welcome in Flensburg; we now have our best friends here,” said Johannes Golla gratefully. He is now moving to North Hesse with his wife and two children, both born in Flensburg. Looking out at the fans, he concluded: “In this arena, I looked forward to every home game; there are so many unforgettable moments.” The transition continued seamlessly with Kevin Møller. “There is hardly a player who has won the hearts of fans and sponsors so quickly,” remarked Advisory Board Chairman Boy Meesenburg. The goalkeeper emphasized the human side: “The many relationships with the team, the front office, the medical team, and the community are what I’ll miss the most.” Kevin Møller once again emphasized his pride in having played for his beloved club for nine years: “I don’t want to take this jersey off at all.” He chanted along with the fans: “Once Flensburg, always Flensburg!” Johannes Golla and Kevin Møller pressed a buzzer together: At that moment, the SG had two more club legends.
