Off to a good start twice

SG Flensburg-Handewitt secured its second win in its second game in the Opel HBL. On Wednesday evening, the team won 34–29 (21–18) on the road against Bergischer HC. The top scorers were Marko Grgić (8/1) and Emil Jakobsen (6).

It was a perfect start. It took nearly ten minutes for the ball to find the back of the SG’s net for the first time. By then, Benjamin Burić had made “only” four saves. Otherwise, the BHC was thwarted by the 6-0 defense organized by Emil Bergholt and Arnar Freyr Arnarsson or missed their shots. Even a seven-meter throw flew wide. Meanwhile, Domen Novak scored twice in quick succession from the right wing before Emil Jakobsen spun the ball into the net to make it 6–0. After that, the SG conceded a couple of quick goals, but they carried a steady lead through the first half. Emil Jakobsen scored to make it 12–8. It was the Dane’s sixth goal; shortly afterward, he limped to the bench, where he received treatment. From there, he watched as the home team narrowed the gap to two goals on several occasions. At times, the visitors played with three right-handers in the backcourt. Marko Grgić scored under pressure to make it 15–19.

Off
to a Good Start After the Break At halftime, the SG led by three goals. The second half got off to a strong start for Simon Möller, who provided valuable support with several saves. The left-handers also had their moment. Domen Novak scored from a sharp angle, and Niclas Kirkeløkke scored from the circle. Marko Grgić extended the lead to 25–18. The SG had everything under control. Simon Möller clearly enjoyed the first quarter-hour of the second half. While he stopped six shots, he only had to fish the ball out of the net three times. His near-namesake, Lasse Møller, was now in the game and capitalized on a defensive blunder to make it 30–22. Nothing was going wrong anymore, even though the team’s efficiency against BHC goalkeeper Christopher Rudeck had plummeted. Aksel Horgen was now in the game. It was his 100th competitive appearance in an SG jersey. Before heading back to the far north that night with two points in hand, the team thanked the fans who had traveled with them for their support.
