- German victory on the first day of the tournament

Strong defense as a foundation

The EHF EURO 2026 is open. The DHB team got off to a successful start in Herning, beating Austria 30:27 (12:8) on Thursday evening. Incidentally, a player from SG Flensburg-Handewitt was named player of the day: Johannes Golla.

He went into the game with a good feeling. "The first training session in preparation had already given me a positive impression, both in terms of physical fitness and mental freshness," said the captain. "We were immediately agile in defense and were able to take away a few of our opponents' strengths." In front of 5820 spectators, including SG coach Aleš Pajović, the DHB team soon took a 5:2 lead and although they had to digest the 6:6, they were 12:8 ahead at the break. The Austrians never gave up, but could not get closer than two goals. Johannes Golla scored a total of seven times. Marko Grgic needed five attempts for his first goal in the first European Championship game of his career and was personally not entirely satisfied. "Tomorrow is a new day," he said. Incidentally, the ace back is sharing a room in the Silkeborg hotel with his club colleague.
