- Winamax EHF Finals: Final Preparations

Focus on Hamburg

For now, the home arena, Duburghalle, serves as a hub for anticipation—and, of course, for training sessions. After SG Flensburg-Handewitt won in Hamburg in 2024 and 2025, the focus is now squarely on the semifinals. The match against MT Melsungen kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Starting tomorrow, Friday, the schedule for the 2026 Winamax EHF Finals will dominate the handball players’ days. For the fans, things get serious starting Saturday. The SG supporters will take their places in the northwest section of the Barclays Arena, forming a dark blue hotspot. “I’m looking forward to a great handball event where the four teams will be supported by their fans with lots of energy,” says Johannes Golla. He has a clear goal: “My dream before this season was to leave Flensburg with a title.” What’s different in Hamburg compared to 2024 and 2025: This time, the EHF has offered the tournament winner a ticket to the EHF Champions League. This added significance apparently had no impact on preparations. “Nothing has changed; we know what matters,” says Lasse Møller. “A Final Four like this has a life of its own anyway, as the close semifinals a year ago proved.”

100 percent focus against a tactical mastermind
Aleš Pajović has everyone on board except Lukas Jørgensen and Luca Witzke. Together with his assistant coach Simon Hennig, he has thoroughly analyzed MT Melsungen, paying less attention to the clear 40-30 victory from late April. “Lately, they’ve had fewer injuries and have played well,” says the SG coach. He describes his MT counterpart Roberto García Parrondo as “a tactical mastermind who likes to mix things up.” Aaron Mensing, who was sidelined by injury for a long time and was part of the SG squad from 2021 to 2023, now also plays an important role at Melsungen. “With him, MT is significantly stronger than without him,” says Johannes Golla. “Aaron has the special ability to score from long range, but also to make important decisions.” For the SG, the focus is now on delivering the best possible performance. “My players are coming in 100 percent focused; they’re in good form,” promises Aleš Pajović. For last-minute decision-makers: Tickets are still available in Hamburg, though according to EHF information, over 10,000 tickets have already been sold.
