Others are talking about summer vacation or at least the weekend. But things are different at SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The team kicked off its preseason training for the 2026/27 season today, Friday.
For the first time in over a quarter-century, the first training sessions took place in Handewitt. After a welcome speech in the Wikinghalle—the “original Hell of the North”—the team headed to the “stadium.” A team from the University of Paderborn set the pace on the track. The players ran intervals, followed by lactate testing. While the first few laps were spent chatting about weddings, golf, and vacations, sweat soon began to flow. Aleš Pajović watched the whole thing closely from the sidelines. “Same story every year: It was nice to be on vacation, but then the anticipation of seeing the team just keeps growing,” smiled the SG coach. After a lunch break and initial interviews with the press, more sports science measurements were on the agenda. The players jumped, reacted quickly, and stretched vigorously.
A Full Schedule for the SG
In the afternoon, the handball flew through the Wikinghalle. The roster was almost complete. Only Kent Robin Tønnesen has to sit out indefinitely due to shingles on his face. Instead, Luca Witzke was seen handling the handball. After his long forced break, the playmaker is to be gradually reintroduced to competitive play. The four new signings received their jersey numbers: Emil Bergholt got 14, Simon Möller got 30, Arnar Freyr Arnarsson got 41, and Aymeric Minne got 44. During preseason, the three young players Catalin Haidu, Klaas Simon, and Onno Buschmann will join the team. On Wednesday, the team heads to training camp in Malmö. On Monday, the team photo and entrance trailer will be shot during Media Day. Otherwise, training will take place on the field or in the weight room. “There are no weekends during preseason—we train every day,” emphasized Aleš Pajović at the start of training.
