Newcomer Emil Bergholt will captain the team during the 2026–27 season. The Danish pivot will be supported by Benjamin Burić as co-captain.
The decision was made unanimously after the first two weeks of preseason training. Head coach Aleš Pajovič, sporting director Ljubomir Vranjes, and the entire coaching staff quickly agreed on who they wanted to entrust with this responsibility.
“A captain doesn’t have to be the player who’s been with the club the longest. For us, the deciding factor was who embodies our values every day and can lead the team,” explains Ljubomir Vranjes. “Emil has shown what kind of personality he has from day one. He possesses exceptional leadership qualities, takes on responsibility, and is a natural leader. This is reflected not only in his communication but, above all, in his daily conduct. He confirmed this impression during the first two weeks of preseason training as well. That’s why we quickly reached a consensus on the decision.”
SG Head Coach Aleš Pajovič also sees the appointment as a sign of the direction the SG intends to take in the coming years. “With Emil, we’re deliberately signaling a fresh start. He leads the way with full commitment in every practice session and inspires his teammates. This is exactly the mindset we want to see both on and off the field. At the same time, it’s important that he doesn’t have to shoulder this responsibility alone.”
Bergholt will be supported by an experienced co-captain, Benjamin Burić. The goalkeeper knows the club, its environment, and the SG’s values like no other and will support the new captain in his role.
“Benko brings an incredible amount of knowledge about the SG and everything that defines the club,” says Pajovič. “This experience will be very valuable to Emil. At the same time, we have a great team in which many players take on responsibility and contribute different perspectives.”
For Emil Bergholt, the appointment is a special honor. “When I joined the SG, I wanted to quickly integrate into the team and take on responsibility. The fact that I’m now being entrusted with the captaincy means a great deal to me. I’m proud of the trust that’s been placed in me and feel very honored. I’ll give it my all every day to help the team and to forge our path together with the guys.”
