With its fourth home win and a 13-1 record in the Opel HBL, SG Flensburg-Handewitt can head into its upcoming back-to-back road games with confidence following its victory over FRISCH AUF! Göppingen. Here’s what the players had to say.
Aleš Pajović, SG Coach: “Göppingen was very patient, played a long game, and really got under our skin. For us, it was a mental challenge. Thirteen technical errors was an unusually high number—usually it’s just six or four. On defense, we had trouble with their four backcourt players. I’d like to mention a few positive things. After the break, our defense worked better and we only conceded ten goals. Our goalkeeper performed well. But we need to be more consistent over the full 60 minutes. Now we’re entering a phase with long trips and tough games.”
Ben Matschke, coach of FRISCH AUF! Göppingen: “That was a well-deserved victory for SG. But I have nothing but praise for my team—given the injury situation among our interior block players and pivot players. Some players also have colds. Everyone executed the game plan with discipline, which allowed us to stay in the game for a long time. Ultimately, Flensburg’s individual strength in one-on-one situations made the difference after we were largely able to stifle their fast-break game. Congratulations also on the great signing for next season: The young player did really well for 60 minutes.”
Emil Bergholt, SG Captain: “Göppingen played consistently and effectively with four backcourt players, which we didn’t handle well in the first half. It was too easy for Göppingen. We talked about that in the locker room. We did much better in the second half. We also benefited from Simon Möller and his saves.”
