It’s the final home game of the season. SG Flensburg-Handewitt is determined to finish the season on a high note in front of a sold-out crowd at the GP JOULE Arena. The match against ThSV Eisenach tips off at 7 p.m.
ThSV Eisenach appears to have established itself in the top flight of handball. Since its promotion in 2023, the first-division club from Thuringia has now secured its place in the league for the third time. In the last two seasons, it finished in 14th and 11th place. Its final ranking this season will likely fall within that range as well. “The team has developed well,” ThSV coach Sebastian Hinze recently summed up. Yet all is not well beneath the Wartburg. In early May, the Eisenach club parted ways “by mutual agreement” and “with immediate effect” with its long-time managing director, René Witte. Instead, Günter Oßwald, a loyal sponsor, and Peter Krauß, vice president of the parent club, took over the management of ThSV Marketing GmbH on an interim basis. The focus is on consolidation until a new manager is found. An exciting project aimed at improving the club’s long-term prospects: The Wartburg Arena is set to be completed by 2028. It will have a capacity of 4,000 seats. Construction has been underway for a year. The costs are expected to total 57 million euros.
A Powerhouse Squad
ThSV naturally hopes to field a powerhouse squad in two years as well—just as they have this season. With Matija Špikić and Silvio Heinevetter, the team boasts a renowned duo of goalkeepers. In front of them, Philipp Meyer and captain Peter Walz serve as the defensive strategists. The Swiss players Timothy Reichmuth and Gian Attenhofer are waiting on the wings for the opportunity to launch lightning-fast counterattacks. So is left wing Vincent Büchner, who just made his debut on the DHB national team and will be joining THW Kiel next season. In the backcourt, Swiss player Felix Aellen made a big impact as both a playmaker and a finisher. Other key players include Swedish left-back Oskar Joelsson and left-handers Stephan Seitz and Max Beneke. At ThSV Eisenach, it’s common for key players to move on after the season to join other clubs—just as happened last season when Marko Grgić joined SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Now, Philipp Meyer (TVB Stuttgart), Timothy Reichmuth (HSC Suhr Aarau), Max Beneke (Frisch Auf Göppingen), and Vincent Büchner (THW Kiel) have already been confirmed as departures. So far, the only new signing has been left wing David Moré (Rhein-Neckar Löwen).
