The HBL home opener 2026

After three away games in a row, the time has finally come. The SG Flensburg-Handewitt is looking forward to its first home game in 2026 in the DAIKIN HBL. As always, the objective is to pick up two points against HSG Wetzlar. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Central Hessian hibernation ended with a double blow: HSG Wetzlar introduced two new signings. One is Michael Allendorf, who took over the position of Managing Director Sport with immediate effect. His predecessor Jasmin Camdzic had announced that he would be taking a personal break from the summer. Michael Allendorf was a left winger at HSG from 2006 to 2010 and then moved to MT Melsungen - first as a player and then as Head of Sport. "In recent years, I have clearly experienced that success only comes where passion, hard work and conviction come together," said Michael Allendorf when he took office in Wetzlar. In his wake was Andreas Palicka. The Swedish goalkeeper moved back to the Bundesliga after just six months in Kolstad, where he had already been under contract with THW Kiel and Rhein-Neckar Löwen. "I want to help out and do everything I can to ensure that we stay in the league together," explained the 39-year-old. He will stay until June and then join the Füchse Berlin.

Not a good first half of the season
The personnel changes were the result of a first half of the season that fell short of expectations. HSG Wetzlar managed to snatch a point from SG Flensburg-Handewitt on the first matchday, but only six more points followed until Christmas. One consequence of the slump: coach Momir Ilic resigned. One day later, Rúnar Sigtryggsson was presented as his successor. The Icelander had most recently worked at Leipzig. Last Friday's match was against the Saxon first division club of all clubs - in a basement duel. The two opponents drew 26:26. Nikola Grahovac, who left HSG Wetzlar early to join the North Macedonian club Eurofarm Pelister, was no longer part of the team. Others are expected to pull the chestnuts out of the fire in the coming months. The top scorers so far have been half-back Philipp Ahouansou and left-handed Stefan Cavor.
