SG Flensburg-Handewitt also won its second exhibition game. But just like on Tuesday, the team was trailing at halftime; however, it ultimately edged out Sønderjyske HH by a hair, 38–37 (17–19).
The stands were packed. There were also plenty of SG jerseys in sight. A German-Danish party atmosphere prevailed even before the opening whistle: “Sweet Caroline.” Both teams got off to a lively start. The number of goals conceded skyrocketed so quickly that the SG bench called a team timeout after just nine minutes. The score was 6–8. Mistakes continued to creep in. “There were too many individual mistakes,” said SG coach Aleš Pajović. “A gift here, another gift there.” Even a sweeping lineup change did little to reverse the trend. Things only started to go a bit better after the score reached 8–13. But the SG continued to play catch-up. The last goal before halftime was particularly noteworthy: Patrick Volz caught a long throw-in in midair and magically slotted the ball into the net to make it 17–19. For him, it was a brief reunion with the venue where he played during the 2024–25 season. “You know the coaching staff and half the team—that’s still a little bit special,” the left wing said later. “Overall, it was a good exhibition game with the right level of intensity.”
The action continued
at a brisk pace. After the break, Lasse Møller and Emil Jakobsen quickly tied the score at 19:19. The SG mixed up their backcourt lineup a lot, even playing formations without a left-hander. The chants of “Flensburg” grew increasingly confident. The 6-0 defense was now having more success. Emil Jakobsen capitalized on a resulting fast break to make it 26:25. Their first lead! “We wanted to focus more on defense,” said Aleš Pajović. “Given this objective, I’m only satisfied with 15 minutes, not 60.” The SG seemed to have found its rhythm, but then lost its footing again. With seven minutes remaining, the hosts from Sønderjyske HH celebrated a 33–32 lead. It was a test match, but there was definitely some intensity in this game. With 50 seconds left on the clock, Emil Jakobsen converted a penalty throw to make it 38:37. On their final attack, Sønderjyske HH was unable to break through decisively. The team and fans celebrated the narrow victory. The plan for the next few days: First, the team will train at home, and starting Friday, they’ll head to Aue for a two-day tournament.
