SG wins Jacob Cement Cup with good second half display

26.08.2011 16:23

The Jacob Cement Cup remains in Flensburg. The SG Flensburg-Handewitt won the game against Aalborg Handball 38-30 (20-21) and also won the individual cups when Sören Rasmussen was voted man of the match and Lars Kaufmann and Anders Eggert each scored eight goals as the game's best scorers.

More than 4000 fans wanted to see the official season opening of the SG. The team started with three new players; Mattias Andersson started in net while Lars Kaufmann and Holger Glandorf were both part of the starting lineup. The defence was not quite perfect though. "We had 21 goals against in the first half, that's simply too much," SG coach Ljubomir Vranjes said after the game.

After the break, Sören Rasmussen was brought on for Andersson and he made some key saves against his former teammates early on. The SG was able to get ahead when Michael Knudsen made it 22-21 and Glandorf extended the lead to four goals a few minutes later.

The home team continued to play well and even went up 34-28 before some of the young players such as Morten Dibbert and Malte Voigt got some playing time. Before that, Knudsen looked in good shape. "My knee is feeling good," he said. "I haven't felt as good as now since December 2009."
